Crown
The placement of crowns is one of the most common dental restoration procedures required for broken or decayed teeth. A dental crown is a fixed prosthesis that restores a significant portion of the tooth. The crown is placed over the remaining part of the damaged tooth and cemented in place.
A dental crown is used when decay or a broken tooth is so badly damaged that a simple filling is no longer possible. While a filling is anchored within the tooth, a crown replaces a larger portion of it. By reconstructing the old parts of the tooth, the original shape is restored, allowing for normal chewing again.
There are different types of dental crowns: replacement crowns, which are used when a large portion of the tooth is lost, and protective crowns, which are used when the hard, dense enamel has been lost. A partial crown covers only the damaged part of the tooth. A full crown covers the entire remaining tooth and is attached to the remaining tooth stump. Other types of crowns include cast crowns, veneered crowns, all-ceramic crowns, and all-composite crowns. All crowns are cemented or bonded in place.
