Inlays/Onlays
The best treatment for a cavity is often an inlay or onlay. Because inlays and onlays last much longer than fillings, they are an excellent option for treatment.
An inlay is a custom-made dental restoration, crafted from gold or ceramic, specifically designed for your tooth. A larger inlay is also called an onlay or overlay – both are bonded firmly to the tooth.
In modern practices like ours, we almost exclusively use ceramic inlays. These can be manufactured in our in-house laboratory using an intraoral scanner and digital technology, and then inserted by us on the same day. We work successfully with the well-known CEREC system (see video). The inlay is precisely fitted into the area being treated and then finished. Once your bite is correct and you are comfortable with the inlay, the treatment is complete. The entire procedure takes only two to three and a half hours.
The lifespan of inlays and onlays is significantly longer than that of conventional fillings, averaging 20 years. The size and location of the inlay or onlay greatly influence its lifespan.
